DBI has a five-year plan to expand beyond the borders of Djibouti and into the neighboring countries, where Dahabshiil Group already has a significant share of the financial services market, especially money transfer operations.

The bank has its main office in Djibouti and plans to add two branches there within 24 months. The plan also includes the opening of licensed branches in Hargeisa, Burao, Bossasso and Mogadishu as well as key locations in East Africa within three years. The objective of the Sponsors is to build a major regional bank. This growth objective is realistic because Dahabshiil Financial Services already has extensive presence in Africa and provides business and marketing support to the new bank.

DBI delivers banking services to communities that are largely outside the mainstream banking environment, especially in rural non-banked areas and in countries and areas where regional strife has discouraged the entry of mainstream banks. The banks expansion drive is being managed in collaboration with strategic partners, especially financial institutions that already have a presence in the target countries and international/regional development banks that promote the development of the private sector and the strengthening of the financial systems in emerging African countries.
